From mist-covered mountains to turquoise island waters — explore Cambodia's most breathtaking destinations by region.
🧭 North — Siem Reap & the Angkor Region. Siem Reap is home to one of humanity's greatest achievements. Angkor Wat ⭐ 4.8 — the world's largest religious monument — rises in perfect symmetry from the jungle, its towers reflecting in the moat at sunrise in a once-in-a-lifetime sight. Inside Angkor Thom, Bayon Temple ⭐ 4.8 haunts visitors with its 216 massive stone faces gazing silently in every direction. For a peaceful escape between temple visits, the Angkor Botanical Garden ⭐ 4.6 offers free entry, shaded paths, fish ponds, peacocks, and orchids.
🧭 Northwest — Banteay Meanchey Province. One of Cambodia's best-kept secrets lies about 160 km from Siem Reap. Banteay Chhmar Temple ⭐ 4.5 is a vast 12th-century Angkorian complex consumed by jungle, with towering trees growing directly through the ancient stonework. Unlike the more famous temples, Banteay Chhmar sees far fewer visitors — giving you an almost private encounter with some of the most atmospheric ruins in Southeast Asia. The surrounding community-based tourism village makes it a rewarding full-day or overnight trip.
🧭 West — Battambang Province. Battambang is Cambodia's second-largest city and one of its most charming — French colonial architecture, riverside cafes, and a thriving arts scene. The province's most beloved experience is the Bamboo Train (Norry) ⭐ 4.0: a bamboo-platform contraption powered by a small engine that rattles through rural rice fields and farming villages for around 30 minutes for just $5 per person. Utterly unique to Cambodia, it's a highlight that no guidebook can fully prepare you for. The surrounding countryside offers cycling routes, bat cave spectacles at dusk, and a slower pace of Khmer life.
🧭 East — Mondulkiri Province. Cambodia's wild east is a highland world apart — rolling hills, indigenous Bunong villages, pine forests, and rushing waterfalls. The Mondulkiri Elephant Sanctuary ⭐ 4.7 offers one of Southeast Asia's most ethical wildlife encounters: trek through jungle highlands alongside rescued elephants in a no-riding sanctuary where the animals roam free. Multi-day treks are available for deeper immersion. Nearby, Bousra Waterfall ⭐ 4.5 cascades in three spectacular tiers through lush highland forest — swim-friendly with a small entry fee, and best visited from October to December when the rains fill it to full power.
🧭 South — Kampot, Sihanoukville & the Coast. Cambodia's southern coast is its tropical soul. Koh Rong Island ⭐ 4.7 dazzles with pristine white-sand beaches, turquoise water, and bioluminescent plankton that turns the sea into a light show at night — Cambodia's top island destination. Inland from the coast, Preah Monivong Bokor National Park ⭐ 4.3 crowns a misty mountain near Kampot with sweeping sea views, roaming wild monkeys, and eerie abandoned French colonial buildings frozen in time. In Phnom Penh, the Royal Palace ⭐ 4.3 is Cambodia's stunning royal complex — golden spires, ornate Khmer architecture, and the famous Silver Pagoda housing 5,000 silver floor tiles and priceless Buddha statues.
Travel experts weigh in — here's our honest guide to the best time to visit Cambodia.
Shoulder Season Best Value
The cool dry season is Cambodia at its finest. Temperatures are comfortable (24–30°C), skies are clear, and the roads are dry. Angkor Wat sunrise is breathtaking, the floating villages on Tonle Sap Lake are lush, and the Mekong dolphins are easily spotted at Kratie. Book early — this is the most popular window for good reason.
High Demand Periods
Temperatures climb to 35–38°C and beyond, making midday exploration at the temple complex challenging. That said, crowds thin considerably and prices drop. Start temple visits at 5:00 AM to beat the heat, and retreat to your hotel pool by noon. Koh Rong Island is a welcome escape from the dry heat.
Weather Warning
The southwest monsoon brings heavy daily rains, road flooding, and reduced temple access. Some rural routes become impassable and the Irrawaddy dolphin viewing at Kratie can be limited. If you must travel during this period, November departures overlap the tail end of the rains with rapidly improving conditions — consider a late-October or November start.
